Nature lovers will enjoy long paved and unpaved sections without traffic through forests as well special paved cycling paths along rivers. Terrain is slightly rolling broken by flat section on river banks.

This tour begins in the vicinity of Sumava National Park, located in the south of Bohemia and follows the Vltava River through beautiful, scenic landscapes to Prague, the historic capital of the Czech Republic.

Taking a trip following the most important Bohemian river is an excellent choice because it naturally takes you to the places that used to be the centers of cultural life in the country during the Middle Ages.

The trip starts in Cesky Krumlov, a UNESCO heritage site. Not only is it a fascinating medieval center, but the cultural life and history of this beautiful well-preserved town is truly unique. Another world-famous stop on your trip will be Ceske Budejovice, which gave its name to Budweiser beer or visit of Hluboka chateau. Other attractions to be visited are Pisek, a town with a remarkable historical center and the oldest stone bridge in the Czech Republic. The royal castle of Zvíkov stands high above the confluence of the rivers Vltava and Otava. Close to Pribram, a town with a long history of silver mining and more recently of uranium mining during the twentieth century stands Saint Mountain with its pilgrimage Church of the Virgin Mary dating from the 16th century. The last but one night you will spend in Karlstejn village with its spectacularly-located fourteenth-century Gothic castle. Cycling tour ends by arriving at your hotel in Prague.

The route follows small country roads with virtually no traffic and off-road biking trails with firm surfaces.

We wish you a pleasant trip!

Itinerary

Day 1. - Transfer Prague to Cesky Krumlov

Guided Group tours start on the scheduled day usually at 9 a.m. Self-Guided tours and non-scheduled group tours can start upon the clients’ request on any day from the beginning of April to the end of October. Pick-up from Prague airport or from hotel reception (for earlier arrivals). Welcome briefing, where bikes and all information materials are distributed. Transfer to Cesky Krumlov by AVE shuttle (170 km = 110 miles), the starting point of the tour. Cesky Krumlov is a medieval town registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List. After adjusting bicycles and a test ride you will have free time to see the world-renowned medieval and Renaissance town of Cesky Krumlov, with its famous castle gardens and many other notable sites.

Day 2 - Cesky Krumlov - Ceske Budejovice - Hluboka nad Vltavou

(42-57 km / 25-34 miles by bike, the distance depends on the route)
After a morning tour of Cesky Krumlov Castle, we take the route along the scenic valley of the Vltava River. The first site to visit on the way is the monastery Zlata Koruna (the Golden Crown). We then ride on to Ceske Budejovice (Budweis in German). After lunch with Budweiser beer, we complete a bike tour of Ceske Budejovice and continue to the day’s objective - Hluboka nad Vltavou. Hluboka Chateau is well worth visiting, and you can also take a pleasant stroll in the elegant park when you arrive in Hluboka or on the following day

Day 3 - Hluboka nad Vltavou - Pisek

(53 km / 32 miles by bicycle)
We will use a special cycling path through scenic Vltava river´s bank to to leave Hluboká. We will see a nuclear power plant or Orlik castle located above the dam of the same name on our way to Písek. Písek is a picturesque town on the Otava River. The main attraction of Písek is a 13th century stone bridge, the oldest in the country.

Day 4 - Pisek - Pribram

(58-68-72 km / 35-41-43 miles by bicycle, the distance depends on the route)
This route will take us through beautiful landscapes with many picturesque villages to Pribram. This is the longest distance of the whole tour. We will pass by Orlik castle, where you can take a tour of the castle to see its splendidly decorated rooms. The second remarkable thing to see is the bridge at Zdakov, which was at the time of its building the world's longest single-span bridge.
At the end of the day's ride, you will arrive in Pribram. The town has been an important mining center since the Middle Ages. However, the more recent history of the town is rather chilling. Many political prisoners were forced to work at the Pribram uranium mines during the Communist regime. There is a noteworthy museum of mining. The town also offers a welcoming place to relax - a swimming pool and aqua park.

Day 5 - Pribram - Zebrak (Zbiroh - premium option)

(35 km / 21 miles by bicycle)
You can visit a 14th - 17th-century pilgrimage church with a monastery, Svata Hora (Holy Mountain), in the morning. We will then continue the ride through this picturesque region. We will cycle through an extensive former military area in the beautiful forested hills of Brdy. You will cycle "in the middle of nowhere" on 9 meter-wide paved roads used by the army in the past. Shortly after Horovice you will arrive in a little town of Zebrak. Zebrak means "beggar",

The route to the Zbiroh chateau (premium option) is slightly different but with the same distance.

Hotel Zbiroh is at the chateau. We recommend relaxing at the wellness center.

Day 6 - Zebrak (Zbiroh) - Karlstejn

40 km or 49km / 24 or 30 miles by bicycle - (This day can be shorter - only 33 km / 42 km)
We will cycle from Zebrak to the impressive 14th-century ruins of Tocnik Castle. The ruins are on the top of a little hill called Zamecka Hora (Chateau Hill) (402 m.) The middle part of the day leads through forested rolling hills. Shortly afterward, we will arrive at Beroun. This is a medieval town in the heart of the Karst district with romantic valleys, caves, pits and localities where pre-historic fossils can still be found. The remaining part of the day follows the Berounka River through the romantic valley all the way to Karlstejn village, where we will stay for a night.

Day 7 - Karlstejn - Prague

(45 km / 28 miles by bicycle)
The last section of the trip is a sweet reward which you surely deserve after having cycled for six days. The route is very easy as it leads along both banks of the Berounka River and later along the Vltava river bank. You can easily reach your Prague hotel by bicycle. Prague is surely one of the most beautiful and romantic cities in Europe. There are innumerable cultural events, cafés, pubs and restaurants and a vivid nightlife waiting for you! This is the perfect end to a splendid holiday!

Travel Reports

Read what the participants of Ave cycling tours think about their experience.

We are safely back home after a wonderful bicycle-tour in your country - full with positive memories. Everything worked perfectly. The material for the tour was excellently processed and sorted accurately in the correct order. There was no question unanswered. I enjoyed it very much to follow the GPS. There was no need to look into the maps. The luggage transport was perfect and we were very satisfied with the hotels. Well, Hotel Koruna in Karlstejn was a little under the standard. The tour was more strenuous than expected but we enjoyed it anyway. The information about the tour should be clear that even gravel roads are to deal with.

Karin and Joachim, Germany, From Cesky Krumlov to Prague along Vltava River, Self Guide,

Wonderful Tour - Guide Milada was excellent. The driver of support vehicle Henry was excellent with his assistance. Bikes were reliable. The accommodation was above normal except in Pribram where it was just normal - clean and OK. The route was challenging enough, very rewarding with great views. I have already AVE website on my computer :)

Peter and Anna, USA, Cesky Krumlov to Prague, Guided Group

We have had a great time - the bikes have been very trusty, no flat tires, no problems, and mostly the bike tracks and routes were really easy to find with great signposting, especially in Czech Republic. we were very impressed. Apart from a rainy day in Cesky Krumlov, the weather has been perfect for riding, and we've seen some fantastic countryside.

Carmel and Marian

I had a wonderful trip from Czesky Krumlov to Dresden, and cannot think of a better way to see the region. Many thanks to you and your colleagues -- your maps, route descriptions, and services made it quite easy to get around, locate hotels, and identify interesting sites to visit en route. I'll definitely let the Biketours Direct folks how great your services were!
