With its breathtaking mountains, ancient legends, and medieval landscapes, Romania is a stunning country where wolves, lynxes, and bears still roam freely. A hidden gem yet to be fully discovered, it boasts one of Europe’s last remaining virgin forests. Our country is home to the spectacular Carpathian Mountains, offering unspoiled scenery, warm hospitality, and a truly authentic hiking experience away from the crowds.

Romania’s wildlife thrives in this invaluable region, filled with dense forests, vast meadows, winding rivers, and picturesque villages. The untouched landscapes shelter unique plant species and tiny insects found nowhere else in Europe. In the lower Carpathian region, cultural and historical landmarks abound, including medieval citadels and fortresses, fortified churches, as well as traditional farms and orchards that have stood the test of time.

The pastoral landscapes are ideal for bikers of all levels, from occasional travelers to passionate enthusiasts and seasoned professionals.

We have designed enjoyable biking trails for you, blending Romania’s rich culture and history with local traditions. Along the way, you’ll experience traditional crafts, wine tasting, historical sites, and authentic farms. Transylvania’s medieval heritage is among the most treasured in Romania.

Southeastern Transylvania is also one of Europe’s most significant natural landscapes, home to rare habitats, diverse fauna, and unique flora. The scenery is a picturesque mosaic of oak and beech forests, lush meadows, rolling pastures, and charming villages.

As we glide through these pastoral lands, we’ll pass through communities of Szeklers, Saxons, and Romanians coexisting in harmony. You will witness historic architecture preserved since the Middle Ages, visit UNESCO-listed fortified churches, explore castles and remote villages, and step into the medieval cities of Brașov and Sighișoara.

Day 2 - Brasov area to Miclosoara village

Distance: 50 km / 31 miles, flat paved terrain, 110 m ascent

After breakfast, you will depart from Brașov, heading north towards Bod, following a scenic secondary route for approximately 14 miles (23 km). Along the way, you will pass through Sânpetru, Bod, Feldioara (Marienburg), Hăghig, Belin, and Aita Mare.

From Feldioara, you will cycle along the Olt River for another 38 km until you reach Micloșoara (Miklósvár), the oldest documented settlement in the region. Here, you will visit the historic medieval castle of Count Kálnoky. First mentioned in 1211 AD, the castle served as a border fortress between the territory granted to the Teutonic Knights and the rest of the Kingdom of Hungary.

Your accommodation for the night will be in Micloșoara, where you will have the unique opportunity to stay at Count Kálnoky’s guesthouses—an experience once enjoyed by King Charles of the United Kingdom. The guesthouses, dating back to the 1800s and earlier, have been carefully restored to preserve their authentic charm and character. Nestled within spacious gardens, some even featuring stork nests on nearby rooftops, the cottages are beautifully furnished with antiques in the traditional Transylvanian Székler and Saxon styles.

**Overnight stay:** Count Kálnoky’s Castle, Micloșoara.

Day 3 - Miclosoara to Viscri

Distance: 68 km / 42 miles, 400 m ascent

After a medieval evening and a refreshing breakfast, you will continue your journey along the Olt River, passing through several picturesque villages.

There are two route options to reach Viscri:

  • A longer route passing through Tălișoara, Vârghiș, Ocland, Sânpaul, Cața, Rupea, and finally Viscri.
  • A shorter route passing through Tălișoara, Vârghiș, Jimbor, Băile Homorod, and reaching Rupea.

Upon arriving in Rupea, you can stop for a quick lunch and visit the impressive Rupea Fortress (please note that reaching the fortress requires a steep climb). Afterward, you will continue your ride via Dacia to Viscri, a stunning UNESCO World Heritage site and your destination for the day.

Viscri is a historic Saxon village recognized for its archaeological and cultural significance. Best known for its iconic white fortified church dating back to the 12th century, the village is a picture-perfect scene with whitewashed houses, thatched roofs, and a thriving community of local artisans. It is a prime example of sustainable community tourism, where traditional crafts and historical buildings have been carefully preserved, offering an authentic glimpse into Transylvania’s past.

You will stay in a beautifully restored traditional guesthouse, where you will have time to explore the village, visit the local bakery, or stop by one of the many artisanal workshops. In the evening, you can witness one of the most iconic sights of rural Transylvanian life—the return of hundreds of cows from the surrounding pastures. There is also an opportunity to take part in a bread-making workshop or enjoy a delicious farm-to-table dinner in one of the local guesthouses.

**Overnight stay:** Traditional guesthouse in Viscri.

Day 4 - Viscri to Cincsor village area

Today, you will leave Viscri and head towards Dacia village, following a gently undulating 15 km paved road to Jibert village. From there, you will cross an 8 km stretch of wild forested hills on your way to Cobor village. The uphill climb from Jibert to the forest can be challenging, and you may need to push your bike at times, but the stunning views make it well worth the effort. Once you reach the top of the forest, the road is paved all the way to Cobor.

In Cobor, you will visit a biodiversity farm that specializes in horse and cattle breeding, where you can also enjoy a delicious organic local lunch. Afterward, your journey continues with a 10 km gravel ride before transitioning back to a paved road for the remainder of the day’s trip.

Your final destination for the day is Cincșor, where you will stay in the beautifully renovated former parish house. This charming accommodation offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere, and you’ll have the chance to meet the owners and hear their stories. Upon arriving in Sighișoara, take the time to explore the enchanting medieval city center. Sighișoara is one of the seven medieval fortified cities of Transylvania, and it is the best-preserved and still inhabited. This small yet vibrant citadel is a photographer’s paradise, with its colorful buildings, narrow cobbled streets, and rich history waiting to be discovered at every corner.

As you leave Sighișoara, the first 5 kilometers will be busier, so please be mindful of the traffic. Along the way, you will pass through the villages of Vălchid and Copsă Mare before reaching Biertan. Once there, we highly recommend visiting the impressive fortified church, and you can enjoy a soup or snack at the local restaurant. The stunning fortifications, with their imposing walls and soaring spires set against the backdrop of lush green hills, create one of the country’s most iconic images.

From Biertan, you will continue on a short but scenic ride through rolling hills to Alma Vii, another beautiful and traditional Saxon village.

You will overnight in a charming traditional Saxon house in Alma Vii village.

The last 15 kilometers to Sibiu are fully paved but can be a bit busy with traffic. Alternatively, you can choose a less crowded route, which includes some gravel sections. Sibiu is the perfect conclusion to our Transylvanian cycling adventure. Having been named the European Capital of Culture a decade ago, it offers a rich cultural experience.

Once you’ve checked into your hotel of choice, you can take a short walking tour through Sibiu. Visit the Old Town, explore the Medieval Fortress, and discover the Brukenthal Museum. Afterward, enjoy a farewell meal to celebrate your journey, and raise a glass of excellent Romanian wine.
