Czech Republic, Germany
7 days / 6 nights - 6 biking days
Self-guided individual tour
Length 240 km / 145 miles
The easiest option is also suitable for children. The distances are shorter than on other routes, and there is only one short climb on the first day. The rest of the journey follows the Vltava and Elbe rivers. Thanks to major investments in recent years, the Prague–Dresden route has become the best-developed cycling trail in the Czech Republic, with more than half of the distance leading along dedicated bike paths or quiet roads with marked bike lanes. For these reasons, this trail is highly recommended for families with children.
Let us take you on an unforgettable cycling journey along the Vltava and Elbe rivers, linking two of Europe’s most fascinating cultural capitals. Prague, a historic crossroads of Czech, German, and Jewish cultures, and Dresden, the former residence of Saxon dukes known as the “Florence of the North,” offer a unique blend of history, art, and atmosphere that will stay with you long after the tour ends.
Following the gentle flow of the rivers, you will cycle through a breathtaking countryside filled with charming towns such as Mělník, Litoměřice, and Bad Schandau. The route leads through the spectacular landscapes of the Czech–Saxon Switzerland National Park, famous for its dramatic rock formations, and continues through the romantic Czech Middle Mountains, shaped by ancient volcanoes. The final kilometers guide you through the elegant cultural scenery of the Dresden Elbe Valley.
This tour perfectly combines world-class cities with outstanding natural beauty. Thanks to its easy terrain, it is suitable even for less experienced cyclists who want to enjoy the ride without physical strain. As a special bonus, you can enhance your trip with a relaxing boat cruise or a half-day hike in the stunning Czech–Saxon Switzerland.

Day 1 - Prague - Nelahozeves area, 35km / 20 miles by bicycleBikes and all travel documents are delivered directly to your hotel in Prague. We are happy to arrange accommodation at one of our partner hotels at the best available price, depending on the dates. If you prefer your own accommodation, please make sure it offers a reception desk and secure bicycle storage. An easy cycle path will take you from Prague along the river past the Baroque Troja Chateau and the Prague ZOO. You will continue north along the Vltava River, known here for its dramatic rock formations and deep valleys. Highlights include the castles of Nelahozeves. Today you will stay at Nelahozeves - a little town known as the birthplace of the composer Antonín Dvořák. |
Day 2 - Nelahozeves area - Mělník, 25 km / 15 miles by bicycleThe easy ride continues, with an optional visit to Veltrusy just 4 km into the route – a magnificent High Baroque chateau set within gardens and parkland. Cycling along the winding meanders of the Vltava River, we continue to the town of Mělník. The stage ends at the confluence of the Vltava and Elbe rivers. Mělník, the heart of the Czech wine region, offers the perfect opportunity to enjoy a glass of excellent local wine. |
Day 3 - Mělník - Litoměřice region, 50 km / 30 miles by bicycleToday’s stage follows the peaceful Elbe region and features easy riding with no significant elevation changes. This area is among the most fertile regions of the Czech Republic, and after the confluence of the Vltava and Elbe rivers, the Elbe gradually grows into one of Europe’s major waterways. After passing Liběchov Castle, we reach the town of Roudnice nad Labem, where you can admire its historic church and castle. The most striking stop of the day is the vast Terezín Fortress, built at the end of the 18th century, an impressive example of military architecture. Its history also bears a darker chapter, as it was used by the Nazis as a Jewish concentration camp during World War II. The day ends in Litoměřice, the historic town and spiritual center of the region, whose charm and beauty stand in strong contrast to the somber atmosphere of the Terezín Fortress. |
Day 4 - Litoměřice region - Děčín, 52 km / 31 milesThe third day of the Prague–Dresden bike tour is dedicated to exploring the romantic landscape of the Czech Middle Mountains. Although the region is hilly, the route mostly follows the Elbe River, with rolling hills and ancient castle ruins rising around us. This former volcanic area was once ideal for building castles and fortresses, many of which now survive only as ruins. One of the highlights of the day is Střekov Castle, dramatically perched on a steep rock cliff and considered one of the most romantic castles in the Czech Republic. After a more demanding climb, you are rewarded with breathtaking views from its walls. The stage ends in Děčín, known as the “Gateway to Northern Bohemia” and the town at the lowest elevation in the Czech Republic. |
Day 5 - Děčín – Czech Saxon Switzerland - Bad Schandau area, 25 km / 15 milesToday's short leisurely stage allows you to spend the rest of the day as you wish. The spa town of Bad Schandau offers relaxation in the spa, swimming pool, sauna, and massages... You may also enjoy a boat trip through the narrow gorges of the Kamenice River, continue cycling along well-marked bike paths through this stunning region, or combine a boat ride with a journey through a romantic valley on a historic tram in Bad Schandau. Although this area lies at the lowest elevation in the Czech Republic, it feels very much like a mountain landscape. After bidding farewell to the Czech Republic, you cross the border into Germany at the edge of the historic spa town of Bad Schandau. |
Day 6 - Bad Schandau area - Dresden, 48 km / 29 milesThis day is full of historical and scenic highlights! Shortly after leaving Bad Schandau, we will pass the imposing Königstein Fortress and, just around the bend, a striking rock formation featuring a romantic rock bridge and the Bastei Ruin. An optional sightseeing tour of the area is highly recommended – the effort to reach these heights is rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views. A few kilometers further, near the town of Pirna, we enter the Dresden Valley, home to beautiful castles and museums dedicated to music masters such as Carl Maria von Weber and Richard Wagner, who composed here. The stage and the tour conclude in the vibrant city of Dresden. |
Day 7 - DresdenFew cities in Germany capture the country’s turbulent history as vividly, showcasing centuries of cultural and architectural achievement alongside religious freedom and economic prosperity. A brief period of Nazi admiration was followed by devastating punishment—the massive bombing of World War II that reduced nearly the entire city to ruins overnight. The post-war years brought forty years of communist neglect, followed by two decades of careful restoration. Today, thanks to this extensive renovation, Dresden shines once again, earning its well-deserved nickname: the “Florence on the Elbe.” Suggestion:
