Giant Ride

6 days / 5 nights - 3 cycling days Bikers on the path

Self-guided individual tour

Length: 99 km -164 km / 60 miles -100 miles

Grade of difficulty: Demanding

This is the most demanding tour in our portfolio and is an enjoyable and challenging ride for all fans of mountain biking. Our suggested routes follow paved car-free tracks in the main. Longer demanding uphill stretches are balanced by long descents and shorter daily legs. Consequently, this tour is also suitable for medium-fit cyclists, not only for hard bikers. For the keen and super-fit there are possibilities to extend some of the proposed legs.

General Information

We invite you to join us and discover the mountains of northern Bohemia - Jizerské hory and Krkonoše (The Giant Mountains) - the highest mountains in Czech Republic. From Liberec, an important historical, economic and cultural centre of northern Bohemia, we climb to the Jizerské hory mountains. The tracks are through gentle undulating hills, which come as a pleasant surprise. This delightful route takes you all the way to the mountain resort of Harrachov, where you stay for the night.
The next day the terrain is more demanding with more hill-climbing. We begin the day with a seven-kilometer ascent rising through 400 meters. As a reward, you will get superb views of the Czech lowlands. During the day you can make a short detour to Labská bouda. This mountain chalet is only 950 meters from the source of River Elbe - one of the most important rivers in Europe. The River Elbe flows into the North Sea at Cuxhaven after 1154 kilometers. We spend the night in the very well-known mountain and winter-sports resort of Špindlerův Mlýn. We suggest prolonging your stay here. The resort stands in the middle of the Krkonoše National Park and offers many activities to enjoy.
We then ride to another mountain resort, Pec pod Sněžkou. On this ride we climb the highest and longest ascent of the tour, 610 meters, which takes you to an elevation of 1,357 meters above sea level. It is possible to take a short detour to the Luční Bouda mountain chalet (1,400m above sea level) and take in the spectacular panorama of the highest mountain in the Czech Republic, Sněžka (1.602m above sea level). Those who are in good physical condition can hike all the way to the summit.
From Pec pod Sněžkou we will transfer you to your hotel in Prague the next day (transfer and night in Prague included).
For nature lovers, we recommend prolonging the tour by cycling through Poland to Teplice nad Metují back in the Czech Republic. This town is the gateway into the renowned nature reserve of the Adršpach-Teplice Rock Towns. We will transfer you to your hotel in Prague the following day (transfer and night in Prague included).

Standard tour programme

Day 1 - Prague - Liberec, (Transfer 105 km / 62 miles by AVE shuttle bus)

We transfer you from Prague Airport or from your hotel in Prague to the cultural and economic centre of North Bohemia - the city of Liberec. Here you can visit the Babylon complex, one of the most visited attractions outside Prague, before you start cycling the following day. There is an extensive aqua park, a wellness centre, a casino, restaurants, bars and much more at Babylon. You can cycle up to Jested hill (1012 m), round trip 30 km.

Day 2 Liberec - Harrachov, (52 km = 30 miles by bicycle)

We start with a warm-up by ascending to the Jizerské hory mountain range. There are pleasant paved car-free tracks as we reach the upper levels of the Jizerské hory nature reserve. These gently rolling tracks will be a very pleasant surprise for you. Enjoy this nice leisurely section of the tour. During the cycling day there will be opportunities for refreshments at several mountain chalets that we pass by. This leg ends with a descent into the recreational resort of Harrachov. This town is situated on the borderline between Jizerské hory and the Krkonoše national park. Harrachov is also well-known because of its ski-jumping competitions and glass production.

Day 3 Harrachov - Špindlerův Mlýn (21 km /13 miles by bicycle, 31 km / 18 miles  with a detour to Labská bouda, and 41km/25miles with detour near Spindleruv Mlyn)

The profile of the terrain changes upon entering the Krkonoše (Giant mountain) national park. Soon after leaving Harrachov, we start a long uphill climb to Dvoračky cottage. This is rewarded by wonderful vistas of the Czech lowlands, far to the south of the Giant mountains. After a short descent we start climbing again. The path takes us along a quiet road leading to the mountain resort of Horní Mísečky. It is possible to take an 8 kilometer detour to the Labská bouda mountain chalet and then hike 950m to the source of River Elbe - one of the most important rivers in Europe. The River Elbe flows into the North Sea at Cuxhaven after 1154 km. A pleasant downhill ride then leads from Horní Mísečky all the way to Špindlerův Mlýn. We recommend prolonging your stay in this well-known mountain resort in the centre of the Giant Mountain region.

Day 4 Špindlerův Mlýn - Pec pod Sněžkou, (26 km /15 miles by bicycle, 31 km /18 miles or 41 km /25 miles with a detours to Lucni bouda and near Harrachov,)

You can take a lift up to St. Peter (bikes are carried free of charge) and continue on the cycling path with a long slightly downhill ride through the forests to Strážné. Or you can warm-up with a 6 kilometer uphill climb to the same point, where both groups can meet. Shortly after Strážné village, we start to climb again. This is the most demanding uphill climb of the whole route - 610m elevation change in 10 kilometers. As you ride on the paved car-free cycling track and gain height, you can enjoy wonderful views of Black Hill and the deep valleys below. Here we will reach 1,357m above sea level. We strongly recommend taking a short detour to get an excellent view of the highest mountain in the Czech Republic - Sněžka (1,602m above sea level). This detour leads to Luční Bouda mountain chalet (1,400m above sea level). If you are in good physical condition, it is possible to hike to the summit following a well-marked three and a half kilometer hiking track. The remainder of the route is an easy 5 kilometer descent to Pec pod Sněžkou.

Day 5 Pec pod Sněžkou - Prague, (Transfer 180 km / 108 miles by AVE shuttle bus)

Transfer to your hotel in Prague unless you have decided to continue cycling further to Teplice nad Metují.

Day 5 Pec pod Sněžkou - Poland - Teplice, (57 km = 37 miles by bicycle)

Particularly for nature lovers, we suggest continuing cycling further east. The terrain changes again and steep mountains are replaced by gently rolling forested hills. On the way to the Broumov district you can ride for several kilometers through Poland. The almost 60 kilometer route goes through the Broumov district, surrounded by the Javoří, Stolové and Jestřebí hills, which has a picturesque landscape with areas of unspoilt nature reserves. It is especially well-known because of its rock towns and unique rustic architecture. A particular highlight is to go hiking through the luscious pine forests and among the rugged and dramatic rock formations of the Adršpach Rock Town.
