Standard Tour Programme
Day 1 - Prague - Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad)
The first day of this bike tour around Czech Republic's spa towns will begin by a pickup from Prague, welcome briefing and transfer to the spa town Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad) (130 km), the largest spa center in the Czech Republic. This town is known since the 14th century, primarily because of its 12 healing and treating springs, the Becherovka Liquor and its world-famous china. As the name of this town suggests, this town was founded by the Emperor Karel IV. (Charles) in the half of 14th century. The rest of the day you can spend on colonnade or you can take short bike or hike loop!
Day 2 - Karlovy Vary (Spa) -Františkovy Lázně (Spa)
Distance: 62km / 39 miles
From Karlovy Vary we will follow the river Ohre (Eger) through wonderful landscape and on brand new bike path! First part runs through a Slavkovsky les (forrest) natural preserve with wonderful canyon in the area of Svatosske skaly. From there we will continue to Loket. This impressive fortress from the 14th century, in a combination with a well protected settlement around the fortress located in a meander of the Ohre River, will be a very romantic stop on our way. Another stop on the way is the town of Sokolov with historical centre dating back to 13th century and nice chateau. Last disturbance from leisure cycling around the river is a small town of Kynsperk dating again back to 13th century with old castle and town centre. The final of the day is another calm spa town - Frantiskovy Lazne. Founded by the Emperor Frantisek I. (Franz) in 1812, the town's center is full of buildings constructed in the Empire and Classicism styles and city itself has real 19th century spa atmosphere.
Day 3 - Frantiskovy Lazne (Spa) - Frantiskovy Lazne castles and Iron curtain trail loop
Distance: 30-60 km / 18,5-37 miles
Today's program is really flexible. Spa lovers can spend the whole day being pampered in the spas' healing waters. For those who prefer two-wheeled therapy, we offer a 70 km loop, but we can adjust lengths and difficulty of the ride to fit you best!
For centuries, Františkovy Lázně was the historical border between the Holy Roman Empire and the Czech kingdom. Therefore, our route winds by castles and strongholds, many of them newly reconstructed, giving our ride that "Old Europe" feel. Part of the path rolls on Iron Curtain trails, reminding us of the dark Cold War period ending less than 30 years ago. In contrast, those choosing a longer option can freely cross the border to Germany to visit the well-preserved castle Hohenberg!
Day 4 - Frantiskovy Lazne (Spa) – Marianske Lazne (Spa)
Distance: 50 km / 31 miles
Just a few kilometres from Frantiskovy Lazne, we will reach the old town of Cheb, since the Middle Ages the entrance to the Czech lands from the Holy Roman Empire. This wonderful old town is the most German town in the Czech Republic. Not only because of the rabbet (a must see!) but for the typical Germanic houses in the main square. It is best known for the emperor Friedrich Barbarossa who liked to stay there and for being the place where Generalissimo Wallenstein (one of the biggest 17th century military leaders) was assassinated. From Cheb we continue biking on nice car-free
roads through authentic local villages (Very-German-looking thanks to centuries of German colonization). We can make a small detour to an old castle and a Loretto chapel in the village of Stary Hroznatov. Our last stop before reaching our hotel will be Chateau Kynzvart. It was built by the Chancellor Clemens Metternich to look very opulent, today it's a nice coffee stop. From here we continue the last few kilometres to Marianske Lazne with its wonderful city centre and many spa options.
Day 5 - Marianske Lazne – Chodova Plana
Distance: 43 km / 27 miles
In the morning we start by going uphill (It's possible to make the top by ski lift). From here we will continue to the Tepla Monastery, founded at the end of the 12th century. Still today we can admire its medieval church and rare library containing more than 80,000 books from all centuries. From here we bike through gentle countryside on car-free roads and cycle paths. The final destination of this day is the
small town of Chodova Plana and its brewery and unique beer spa! It can be a nice, restorative end of the day - ask us to book it for you! Baths made by mixing healing
springs with beer extracts along with drinking beer as well... experiencing these local procedures will convince you that beer can treat you well, inside and out!
Day 6 - Chodova Plana – Karlovy Vary (or transfer to Prague)
Distance: 43 km / 27 miles
Today we enter the Slavkov Forest nature preserve to discover its hot springs and other curiosities. In the village of Krasno we can enjoy tower-top views and learn a lot about the town's history in its mining museum. From there we bike to the town of Becov nad Teplou, its chateau the hiding place of the famous St. Maura reliquiary. It is one of the most important and valuable historical items of the country and of all Middle Ages Europe! From Becov we can either take a transfer to Karlovy Vary, bike the remaining distance, or simply take a transfer to Prague. It is your decision in which of the two cities you spend your last evening of the tour.
Day 7 - Karlovy Vary or Prague
This day is up to you to relax and explore either Karlovy Vary or Prague by yourselves. If in Prague and eager for more biking, we highly recommend one day bicycle trip from Prague to Karlštejn Castle.
- at last 10% discount on pre or post tour nights in Prague. We will send you the best available offer for the hotel you choose from www.avehotels.cz.
