Prague Castle is a unique monument reflecting the development of architecture from the period of the hill-forts in the late 9th century to the 18th century Classicist reconstruction under Empress Maria Theresia and finally 20th century adaptations under President Masaryk. The most significant events in the thousand years development of Prague Castle include foundation of the Church of the Virgin Mary by Prince Bořivoj of the Přemysl family in the 9th century, construction of Romanesque St. Vitus Basilica by Prince Wenceslas (Václav), foundation of the Convent of St. George and establishment of bishopric under Boleslav II in 973, foundation of St. Vitus´ Cathedral in 1344 and Gothic reconstruction of the Castle under Charles IV, Late Gothic fortification and Vladislav Hall built by Benedict Ried for Vladislav Jagello, Renaissance alterations under Emeperor Rudolph II and Classicist reconstruction by Nicolo Pacassi which gave Prague Castle its present appearance. 20th century adaptations of interiors, southern gardens and courtyards by Josip Plečnik and his disciples enriched the Castle architecture with new elements.
