The Heart of the Kingdom – Gothic Castle Karlstejn was the most important royal castle in the Middle Ages. The Czech King and Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV had it built as an impregnable fortress housing the imperial crown jewels and the most sacred relics. The decoration in the Gothic Chapel of the Holy Rood is unique – the ceiling and walls are covered in gold and semi-precious stones. The most valuable treasure here is a collection of almost 130 Gothic panel paintings by the Prague painter Master Theodoricus (Master Theodoric). Outside of Italy, such an extensive collection of paintings from the 14th century is unmatched in Europe.
